Environmental Preservation Award For the first time, a printing company has won the Excellence in Environmental Preservation Award from the Software Manufacturing Association. The award was presented to Courier at the association's annual meeting October 16th in Cambridge, Mass. It acknowledges Courier's corporate responsibility in areas such as working with suppliers to use the most energy efficient and recyclable products, and ensuring that manufacturing processes are as environmentally friendly as possible. EPP - Tip of the Month You should not rotate or skew live bitmapped images in your page layout program. The pixels are mapped to a horizontal/vertical grid that cannot be altered. If you attempt to rotate or skew the image, it is remapped to the original grid, resulting in a loss of quality. Image-editing software is better at remapping the pixels than page-layout software. EPP Tips are from Right from the Start, published by Courier Corporation. The guide is available in PDF form online, or you can request a printed copy through your sales representative or by e-mailing Priscille Georgeou at georgeou@courier.com. Custom Publishing College Coursepacks Courier's Copyright Management Services Signs with CSC Courier has been awarded a contract from Collegiate Stores Corporation to be the exclusively recommended supplier of coursepacks to CSC's nationwide membership of more than 500 independent campus stores. "We recognize that the coursepack market is a rapidly growing segment," said Eldon Speed, CSC President, "and we're interested in helping our stores serve this demand in the most efficient way possible. National Publishing Company Completes Move and Expansion National Publishing Company's move to 11311 Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia from its downtown location on the riverbank is a big one; they've been there since 1863. But the relocation opens the door to better, faster and more economic production for National, who enjoys a considerable portion of business in the lightweight paper, long run segment of the publishing trade, as well as warehousing and fulfillment. The move, which began in 1995 with the relocation of vest pocket manufacturing and fulfillment, was followed in 1996 by the completion of a 100,000 sq. ft. addition. This facilitated the relocation of the rest of National's operations by the end of the year. New Technology at Work in Kendallville For the sixth consecutive year, Courier manufactured The Ernst & Young Tax Guide for John Wiley & Sons. For this year's edition, we utilized the Internet to transfer the files from the customer to our FTP server, then to our wide area network to transfer the files to Kendallville's EPP department. Originally intended to be used as a back-up plan, we in fact used the files to prepare flats ready for platemaking. The process created crisp type and clean screens, and we were able to download the files and have blues in the customers hands within three hours. The people at John Wiley were very happy with the end result, and the efficiency and quality of the process. Kudos to Powell Simonton, Janet Deahl and the full prepress staff in Kendallville for the many hours they put in to turn out this excellent job. |
