Color: Kendallville
Courier
Kendallville customers will enjoy a dramatic increase in 2- and 4-color
capacity when four additional units for the plant's newest 4-color press
come online in May, and a recently purchased 2-color web press is installed
in July. "We are expanding capacity now to meet our customers' growing
demand for color," says Sybella Wilder, Plant Manager. "And to accommodate
this surge in color printing, we have timed a significant increase in
binding capacity to coincide with the press startups."

Stoughton's
new Cover Press A brand-new Heidelberg
5-color sheetfed press will be installed in May in Stoughton. The state-of-the-art
press boasts an in-line aqueous coater and will print covers, jackets and inserts.
Kendallville will begin printing covers this summer when the 4-color Heidelberg
running today in Stoughton will be moved there, and Book-mart already prints covers.
As Rob Chilton, Stoughton Plant Manager, points out, "Expanding this in-house
capability to three plants will continue to ensure quality and service across
all Courier facilities." Computer-to-Plate
Phase II: Westford Computer-to-plate
technology began for Courier with 4-color work in Kendallville. Soon, all 1-,
2- and 4-color work in the plant was going CTP. Faster turnaround time, improved
print quality and improved flexibility for Courier customers quickly became a
reality. Now Courier Westford is coming on line with CTP, beginning in May. The
partnership between Creo Products and Courier continues to be an overwhelming
success. Westford is Courier's largest plant, roughly twice the size of Kendallville,
and produces one- and two-color books. Don Hunter, Plant Manager, says, "With
CTP, our customers not only get a better book, they get it faster. CTP has been
a great success in Kendallville, and Westford is the next logical step." By the
end of '00, all of Westford's new web work will be CTP.

Lightweight Paper Capacity: New Web Press at National
Courier's National Publishing Company has ordered a specialized new Timson web
press, which will serve the religious market and create an opportunity for medical
and professional publishers. The press will print one- and two-color right-grained
books with a trimmed size in the 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" range. This equipment is especially
tailored to lightweight paper, long runs and high page counts, a segment of the
publishing trade that has always been National's strong suit. "The new press will
give us the ability to produce small format reference works and anthologies that
are of the absolute highest quality," says Bill Flavell, President of National
Publishing. The new press is scheduled to go online in May of 2001.
Book-mart
Press: Renovation Doubles Prepress Space
Courier's Book-mart Press, Inc. is in the process of renovating the entire
prepress area to incorporate several technical improvements, resulting in almost
twice the production space as before. Book-mart will continue its conventional
prepress operation, but soon will provide in-house digital prepress services with
a computer-to-film solution. There will be a new server, workstation and film
imagesetter, including a PostScript III RIP.
