| Courier Westford, located in Westford, MA, is a book manufacturing workhorse with broad capabilities. It has long produced top-quality books for publishers. In this issue we take a close look at the plant and all that it has to offer. |
| What Courier Westford Does Best |
| "We focus exclusively on one- and two-color books," says Christine Holmes, Plant Manager at Courier Westford. "But within that niche we offer publishers an incredibly broad range of print and bind options. Hardcover or paperback, sewn or adhesive bound, long- or short-run, halftone or line-work-we have the equipment and the experienced employees to produce the best one- and two-color books in the industry." Case binding is a particular strength of Courier Westford. Stamped cases (one- or three-piece) and preprinted cases are all made in-house. There is plenty of Smyth sewing capacity. Automated jacketing speeds throughput. And recent investments in a high-speed case-maker and a state-of-the-art casing-in line make Westford's case binding capabilities second to none. |
| A Little History |
In 1966 Courier acquired Murray Printing Company, a small book manufacturer in Westford, MA, by purchasing it from the founder's son, Albert C. Murray. Courier enabled its newest subsidiary to meet growing demand from the education and trade markets in New York and Boston by expanding the plant and purchasing more equipment. Almost four decades have passed since the acquisition of Murray Printing. Under Courier's wing, the company's client base has grown to include publishers from across the country, and its capabilities have been expanded greatly. But its focus has always been on one- and two-color books. Today the company is known as Courier Westford, Inc. — a reflection of its current role as one of many Courier plants, each with its own focus, that work closely together to provide world-class service to book publishers. |

| Right From the Start Tip |
When reviewing a digital blue-line or any other hardcopy proof, mark all your corrections directly onto the proof itself. Do not use removable self-adhesive notes — they fall off easily resulting in missed corrections. Tips of the Month are excerpted from Right from the Start: The book professional’s guide to preparing digital files for print production, Fifth Edition, published by Courier Corporation. |
