On the Air
Courier and WGBH, Boston

Tried and 2 is the title of the WGBH/Channel 2 Boston auction cookbook this year, and Courier is lending support to the public television project by printing and binding the book in our Westford and Stoughton plants. Other assistance comes from Courier volunteers, who will be manning the phones at the auction on June 6th and 7th. Public television viewers and associates of Courier in the Channel 2 viewing area can watch for familiar faces, good buys and a fine collection of recipes.

EPP - Tip of the Month

During the design process many colors may be defined, tested and then rejected. However the rejected colors may remain in the layout templates. You should remove these unnecessary colors from the color palette to speed printing and ensure that they are not accidentally used. The default red, green and blue which are not CMYK colors should also be removed.
EPP Tips are from Right from the Start, published by Courier Corporation. The guide is available in PDF form online, or you can request a printed copy through your sales representative or by e-mailing Priscille Georgeou at georgeou@courier.com.

New Adhesive Binding Systems Installed at Westford and Kendallville
Binding Capacity Increases by 80%

In an important company initiative, Muller Martini Normbinders have been installed at the Westford and Kendallville plants. These high speed adhesive binding systems are the best in the industry, and impact Courier's ability to respond to customer needs in a very positive way.

The Normbinders allowed Kendallville to expand its range of products dramatically, and customers will benefit from improved productivity and increased capacity in both plants. Furthermore, the new binders can produce thicker books - up to 2.75 inches.

A crack installation team comprised of both Courier and Muller personnel set up each line in record time, according to Joe Brennan, Director of Engineering at Courier. Through a well organized cooperative effort, the team completed the installations in under three weeks each, where normally they require five to seven. Both Courier and Muller are extremely pleased with the results. In fact, Muller has said that the Courier projects will be used as their model for future installations.

New Release of Courier's Popular and Informative Right from the Start

What began as general instructions for preparation of materials for printing has evolved into an informative and valuable resource for users of electronic prepress. The fully revised second edition of Courier's Right from the Start is now on press; it includes updates and new information in the same concise, feature-packed format as the first.

Steve Franzino, Director of Technology at Courier, says, "We've updated our original, excellent product in this second edition, and more. It's the most user-friendly, comprehensive document we've ever created."

Included in the second edition of Right from the Start are:
  • How to create files from applications running in Windows 95;
  • How to create Adobe PDF files;
  • Detailed instructions about creating film, with specifications that include all Courier press configurations and trim sizes.
A diskette is also included which contains electronic versions of forms for digital file submissions found in the book, so that customers can print as many copies as needed, at their convenience.
