New Four-Color Press On Schedule The Kendallville installation of the Heidelberg M130 with Computer-to-Plate interface is proceeding right on schedule. The first job will be run in early July. Courier Works Hand-In-Hand with New Publisher for Rave Reviews As they faced a tight schedule and looming deadline with a complicated digital version of their first four color casebound book, Fitzgerald Science Press made a decision that would insure seamless, on-time completion of their project - they contacted Courier. The Brain Atlas, A Guide to the Human Central Nervous System, is packed with complicated illustrations, scans and photos, and will serve as a medical textbook and valuable reference for practicing physicians. More importantly to Fitzgerald, it was their biggest and most critical project to date. "Two things strongly influenced Fitzgerald's decision to choose Courier," said Scott Brown, Sales Representative. "One was our expertise with electronic prepress and computer-to-plate. Right off the bat we were able to provide information to Fitzgerald which helped their compositor improve the file. The other factor in our favor was the great referrals they obtained from two other publishers, who recommended Courier over a competitor because of our emphasis on service and the excellent work we've done for them in the past." The intricate design for the book was difficult to achieve on press, yet the final result was enthusiastically approved by Susan Graham, a member of Fitzgerald's project team who flew to Kendallville for the press check. "A-plus," said Graham. "We're very grateful to Courier for the difference their high level of service made in the final outcome. Every issue was addressed, every process explained. The signatures looked great. Things went perfectly." Courier Markets Upgraded Homeschooling Catalog Nationwide Since 1985, The Home School has offered books and supplies to families that practice home-based learning as a replacement or supplement to traditional schooling. Courier acquired The Home School in 1997 and has now expanded the catalog operation from 30,000 families, mainly in the Pacific Northwest, to over half a million families nationwide. The company is also initiating Smart ChoiceTM, a telephone-based subscription service that provides curriculum guidance and information to homeschooling parents. The redesigned and user-friendly Home School Catalog contains over 2,000 items, from full curriculums to supplemental materials. It is written in a friendly and informative way by homeschoolers with hands-on experience using the products. Customized education in general and homeschooling in particular are growing very fast. Demand for homeschooling products has risen 30% in each of the past five years, making it the fastest growing segment in the el-hi market. The Home School joins Copyright Management Services, a division of Courier, in serving the customized education market. EPP - Tip of the Month When working with frames or ruled boxes, use the frame specifications provided by your layout software. Try not to use individual rules to create boxes, as it is very difficult to get the corners to meet exactly. Do not use the predefined "hairline" measurement to specify width; instead, specify the thickness as .25 points. The predefined hairline may be nearly invisible when produced on a high-resolution imagesetter. EPP Tips are from Right from the Start, published by Courier Corporation. The guide is available in PDF form online, or you can request a printed copy through your sales representative or by e-mailing Priscille Georgeou at georgeou@courier.com. New Scanner at Courier Westford The new Cezanne Scanner which was installed recently in Westford's Electronic Prepress area offers Courier customers a significant advantage in file preparation, while bringing all Courier scanning projects in-house. The flatbed scanner features full four-color scanning capabilities and can handily accommodate slides, transparencies and negatives in many sizes. Proofs generated with the scanner more closely replicate what the customer will get in their books, simulating dot gain, colors and texture of dots. In addition, the Cezanne can protect out-of-date, rare copy submitted by Courier customers, because the copy isn't wrapped around a drum. Ask your Courier Sales Rep to show you the new scanning portfolio, which contains original pictures and a variety of proofs on glossy and smooth papers.
