Courier
Connection: A Milestone In Courier History

In the late 80's, desktop publishing
was the first sign that printing and publishing workflows would eventually go
digital. In 1990, Courier became a pioneer in the book industry when it established
the Courier Connection, offering in-house imaging of film from DTP files.
The 90's have brought a steady flow of new technology such as high speed digital
printing, custom publishing and computer-to-plate, and through it all Courier
has provided the technological leadership that began with the Courier Connection.

Courier Customers
are Now Better Informed - Electronically

An exciting new service option
provides Courier customers with timely information about their pending orders
without a lot of fuss: it's the e-mail version of the Customer Job Status Report.
This easy-to-read report can be sent to Courier customers, arriving automatically
every Tuesday morning, or at any time requested. The report contains real-time,
up-to-the-hour information, consolidated for all jobs in our Westford, Stoughton
and Kendallville plants, and customers can choose to have their report sorted
by author, book code, title or several other criteria.

Each report is an 80-column text file which may be opened for viewing in Windows
using Notepad or Wordpad. The report may also be viewed and printed using a word
processor such as Microsoft Word.

Contact your Courier Sales Representative for more information about Customer
Job Status Reports and your customizing options.

Update: Y2K
at Courier by Donald Hunter, Director,
Year 2000 Project

Courier's Year 2000 Project continues on schedule.
The next steps in the project include the system testing of hardware and software
applications, continued follow-up with key suppliers and service providers, and
the development of contingency plans.

Courier's Year 2000 Task Force is developing contingency plans in two phases.
The first involves planning for the millennium event itself. This will require
documented plans on how to shut down all systems prior to January 1st, then carefully
power up computers, equipment, etc. after the new year. The second phase includes
business continuity planning. The Task Force has identified critical business
processes in sales, marketing, customer service, manufacturing, human resources,
purchasing and finance that could be impacted. Currently they are developing business
process work-arounds to ensure uninterrupted operations. More about Courier's
Y2K program will follow in subsequent issues of Fine Print.

4-Color Separations

Your
page layout software is adept at separating color, whether it's spot color or
4-color work. The trick is that you must specify spot or process color for the
separation to be correctly performed. Be sure to turn your process separation
feature on if you want a process color to separate into four correct CMYK plates;
turn it off if you want spot color to separate to its own plate. Set the separation
menu in your Print dialog box to "On," and print samples to see that your instructions
were correct. Short

Industry News... Two
key industry trade organizations are headed by Courier employees this year. In
the Midwest, Kim Hawley, Courier Sales Representative, has been named President
of the Chicago Book Clinic. And in the New England area, Andrew VanSprang, also
a Courier Sales Representative, is the new President for Bookbuilders of Boston.

On the Air Again
for PBS... The 1999 WGBH Channel 2 Auction in Boston was assisted again
this year by Courier Corporation and our employees. Courier underwrote part of
the auction, printed the beautiful promotional cookbook that was sold throughout
the event, and provided a dozen enthusiastic volunteers to take bids over the
phone.

Early word is that the
auction was a success for Channel 2, and Courier is proud to have been a part
of their fundraising effort. |
