Digital Archiving Advantage for Courier Customers In preparation for emerging direct-to technologies, Courier has fully implemented digital archiving at all Courier electronic prepress locations, at no additional cost to our customers. "The printer remains, as it always has been, the logical collection point for archiving titles. We utilize CD-ROM as well as digital linear tape to archive all of our customers' supplied files as well as prepress services provided by Courier. Digital archiving is the cornerstone of effective title management," said Steve Franzino, Director of Technology for Courier. The system will accommodate revisions and corrections as well as job profile information throughout the life of the title. EPP - Tip of the Month Avoid using large images that will later be cropped in the page layout. Even though only part of the image will be visible after cropping, the rest of the picture that is hidden will still be processed by the imagesetter. This results in large file sizes and increased processing times. Use the cropping tool in your image-editing program instead. EPP Tips are from Right from the Start, published by Courier Corporation. The guide is available in PDF form online, or you can request a printed copy through your sales representative or by e-mailing Priscille Georgeou at georgeou@courier.com. Courier Kendallville Four-Color Goals Realized Enhancements of '95 Surpass Long Term Capability Expectations Doug Debusk, General Manager at Courier's Kendallville plant, reports that the recent installation of a Harris M850 four-color press has been significant in supporting Kendallville's aggressive product diversity plan. "From elementary, high school and college textbooks to specialty catalog products; from cookbooks to children's reading, we don't skip a beat." The equipment was purchased and installed in response to market growth in the four-color area. It complements Kendallville's existing four-color capabilities, full-service casebinding and recently expanded electronic prepress capabilities by supplying 32 page signatures and greater flexibility. Coming up for Kendallville: "We'll continue to grow the four-color business we have, reinforcing our support to existing customers while we pursue additional business, and capability will expand as needed," said Debusk. National Publishing Honors Merck in a Timely Way In appreciation of the long-term partnership between National Publishing and Merck & Co., National President George Nichols recently presented Merck Publisher Gary Zelko with a unique clock. The two-sided timepiece served as a silent witness to fifty-plus years of production of the flagship Merck Manual at National's Locust Street plant. With National's recent relocation, the clock was taken out of service. What better way to begin the second half century of the partnership than to present the clock to Merck? Shortening Response Time Courier/Mead Paper Program Response to the new Courier/Mead paper stocking program has been greater than anticipated. Originally developed for a major Courier customer, the practice of keeping popular sizes and weights of Mead stock on hand in Courier plants has benefited other Mead Paper and Courier customers as well. "Several weeks can sometimes be shaved from production schedules, just by having this on-hand stock, which is billed to Mead customers as it is used to fill their orders," said Ron Goulart, Purchasing Manager at Courier.
