New Press Expands Four-Color Capacity, Flexibility at Kendallville

Courier has purchased a Heidelberg M130 four-color web press to augment our ever-expanding two- and four-color and computer-to-plate operations in Kendallville, Indiana.

With the addition of the M130, a workhorse in the Heidelberg line, Kendallville will be able to run four-color work on three web presses. "It's a great move for Courier, emphasizing our continued commitment to four-color," said Joe Brennan, Vice President of Engineering. "The press is ideally suited to high quality four-color books, and its impact on Kendallville's four-color production will be tremendous." Brennan added that production schedules will not be affected during installation of the new press.

A special feature of the press system will be the electronic integration of the Creo prepress workflow. The Heidelberg CIP-3 Computer-to-Plate Interface will provide for the automatic presetting of the ink fountains. Customers can expect scheduling flexibility and response time in Kendallville to reach record levels as we start up the new press this summer.

CTP Flash

As of press time, the Computer-to-plate installation at Kendallville is proceeding smoothly, with testing complete and the first CTP job due on press shortly.

Welcome, New Readers

If this is your first issue of Courier's Fine Print Newsletter, it may be because we met at the recent BookTech show in New York, or PubTech in Chicago. We saw many Courier customers at the shows, and made many new friends.

New reader or not-- we hope you enjoy Fine Print.

EPP - Tip of the Month

Submit copies of all the bitmap fonts (screen fonts) and outline fonts (printer fonts) you use in your jobs, every time you submit a job. Many manufacturers continually revise their fonts, so if your version is different from the plant's, you may see unexpected results. And always send the entire package of fonts. Editing out sizes because you didn't use them will cause reflows since the suitcase is now different.
EPP Tips are from Right from the Start, published by Courier Corporation. The guide is available in PDF form online, or you can request a printed copy through your sales representative or by e-mailing Priscille Georgeou at georgeou@courier.com.

Courier Launches Year 2000 Compliance Program

In order to ensure that the company's systems, equipment and facilities are Year 2000 compliant, Courier has launched a corporate-wide effort to address the situation.

The "Y2K" project at Courier will take a multiphase approach to solving the challenges to computer systems and other equipment when '99 becomes '00. Awareness, assessment, analysis, planning, conversion, testing and implementation will be critical points along the project's timeline.

"As part of this process, we expect to replace and upgrade some parts of our information systems," said Don Hunter, Director of Courier's Year 2000 Project. "This will result in new and better technology and improvements in functionality and customer service- an 'up side' to the compliance project."

It is Courier's goal to be Year 2000 compliant early in 1999.

Introducing Right from the Start Third Edition

Courier's popular text, Right From the Start, which has quickly become the industry standard of electronic prepress, is undergoing another revision this spring.

Steve Franzino, Vice President of Technology at Courier, said, "In the same user-friendly format, this new edition will include much more about creating PDF files, as well as new information about proofing in a computer-to-plate workflow. We will also provide detailed FTP transfer instructions for the Mac, Windows and UNIX operating systems." And like the second edition, this update will be available online at our website, www.courier.com.
