EPP - Tip of the Month

Trapping can often be a more complicated process than page layout and illustration programs can handle. Trapping text to imported graphics, for example, is better left to digital prepress professionals with their years of experience and sophisticated software. They also understand all the factors that go into trapping your files including the type of paper to be printed on, the printing process to be used, pressroom conditions, anticipated dot gain, etc.

If you do decide to trap on your own, which may be possible for simpler jobs, be sure to discuss all the details with your CSR. Factors like setting black type to surprint or knock out, trapping for chokes and spreads, and trapping in imported graphics will be important to the successful completion of your job.

EPP Tips are from Right from the Start, published by Courier Corporation. The guide is available in PDF form online, or you can request a printed copy through your sales representative or by e-mailing Priscille Georgeou at georgeou@courier.com.

Courier Acquires The Home School

Why is the Northeast's largest book manufacturer becoming an expert in home schooling?

Demand for home schooling products and home-based supplements to traditional schooling is growing, creating a potentially lucrative new market for elementary and high school textbook publishers. Today there are 1.2 million home schooled students in grades K-12 in the United States, and this number is growing 15 to 20 percent per year. Courier sees an opportunity to help publishers market their products directly to parents who are looking for assistance with self-paced, individualistic learning.

According to James F. Conway III, Chairman of Courier, the company acquired the Arlington, Washington-based company because it is the knowledge leader in its field. Founded in 1985 by William and Linda Jury, The Home School provides not only complete one-stop shopping for home schoolers, but expert advice to parents in determining the most appropriate materials for educating their children at home.

"Home schooling is a customized approach to education," said William Jury, founder of The Home School. "Parents have lots of questions about the process. Everyone at The Home School has lived the home schooling experience, either as a teacher or as a student. Our customers feel comfortable talking to us because we can give them sound advice. That's what we do better than anyone else."

George Q. Nichols - Master Bookman

The Book Manufacturer's Institute recently bestowed its Distinguished Master Bookman Award to George Nichols, President of Courier's National Publishing Company and a member of Courier's Board of Directors. The award, last given in 1988, commemorates George's extraordinary contribution to the book manufacturing industry.

George was President of the Book Manufacturer's Institute from 1978-80, and a Director from 1976-82. He helped organize the Book Industry Study Group and served on its Board of Directors from its inception. He served on the National Advisory Board of the Center for The Book at the Library of Congress from 1977-84.

In 1990, George was awarded BMI's Signature Award, which honors members who have made a valued contribution to the welfare of the industry and/or the Institute. It's nice to know that the industry appreciates George as much as we do here at Courier.

Mother Teresa Bio in Record Time
Courier Comes Through for Element

When publisher Element Books needed more copies of Navin Chawla's Mother Teresa, the first and only authorized biography, Courier came through.

Realizing there would be an immediate surge in sales of the book after Mother Teresa's death, Element contacted their original manufacturer, who responded with a four to five week projected delivery time. Element needed their books now, so they contacted Courier.

Kirsten Kelly, Account Manager at Courier Westford, made the calls and arrangements that led to the manufacture and shipment of 20,000 casebound and jacketed books just one week after the death of Mother Teresa.

"We knew we had the resources to take care of this order," said Kelly, "It became a matter of bringing the right people and processes together without impacting the delivery schedules of other Courier customers who had orders working. In the end, everything went according to plan, and we were able to take care of Element."
