Courier Fine Print A Bimonthly Communication for Customers and Friends Welcome to Courier Fine Print, a newsletter designed to sum up, run down and hash over current happenings at Courier Corporation for our customers and friends. We hope you'll enjoy receiving Courier's newest communication every other month or so, and we welcome your questions and comments. Peter Tobin General Manager, Publishing Markets EPP - Tip of the Month Scaling live bitmapped images after they are imported into the page layout program scales the pixels. If you scale the image up, you will see the individual pixels; if you scale the image down, you will sacrifice detail in the image. If you cannot initially capture the image at correct size, it is best to scale it in an image-editing application, which has sophisticated ways to create or discard pixels. EPP Tips are from Right from the Start, published by Courier Corporation. The guide is available in PDF form online, or you can request a printed copy through your sales representative or by e-mailing Priscille Georgeou at georgeou@courier.com. One to One Million Bring Your On-Demand Work to Courier Westford Courier's Westford plant recently expanded its capabilities through the addition of on-demand printing, transferred from our EPIC facility in North Chelmsford. The Xerox DocuTechs which had long been a fixture at EPIC, now enable Westford to handle any order from one to one million copies, all under one roof. "The objective is to enhance our ability to react to customer needs for the lifetime of each publication," reports Steve Franzino, Director of Technology. "We can better manage the life cycle of a title by picking the equipment most appropriate for a quick and efficient response - web, sheet-fed or DocuTech - all from one shop. Short runs are easier to accommodate, and we gain from Westford's historic strength in binding and finishing." The installation took place in early summer, and the equipment was quickly assimilated into Westford's operations. Westford also made recent electronic enhancements, with larger servers and more disk capacity to strengthen Electronic Prepress capabilities and further support title life management. Kendallville Casebinding Complete Process Now Available in Kendallville, Westford and National The installation of Kendallville's full-service casebinding and other services last spring emphasizes Courier's overall commitment to casebinding, now available in three plants, and enables Kendallville to position itself as a stronger, more flexible contributor in the Courier organization. "Whether components are created here or somewhere else, Kendallville can provide the final assembly," says Plant Manager Doug Debusk. "This means quicker service and a larger capacity base for the company. We can deliver casebound in the Midwest and at the same time support our customers nationwide." As demand has grown, Kendallville has added a second shift, and is preparing to add a third. "The technology is there for 24-hour operations, and we're easing into that schedule with no problems," Debusk adds. "In addition, four-color electronic prepress continues to expand here with the acquisition of our Scitex system, and we're beginning to produce four-color film for covers." Enhancements at Kendallville continue, as the focus has grown beyond traditional educational materials to a larger mix that encompasses professional reference and trade publishing. Regarding the additional resources at Kendallville, James F. Conway III, Chairman, President and CEO of Courier, says, "We continue to respond to our customers' needs by strengthening our core printing and binding operations, as well as the value-added production and information management services that surround them. Kendallville's new, more efficient binding lines, their new four-color web press and their expansion into casebinding, saddle-wire and four-color film for covers, reflects Courier's continued commitment to our customers, Kendallville and the people working there." ISO9002 Process Now Available in An Impressive Team Effort for Courier Stoughton ISO9002 is a series of standards sponsored by the International Organization for Standardization. It's a system for ensuring the quality of output processes, and a tangible expression of a firm's commitment to quality that is internationally understood, accepted and respected. Courier's Stoughton Coordination Group completed an aggressive timetable for ISO9002 certification last November. "It's been a chain reaction of events," says Rob Chilton, Plant Manager at Stoughton. "The people on the floor understood what was going on, and offered feedback on the process. In return, the process gives them a basis for continuous systematic improvement."
