Start Courier and Book-mart Press Courier and recently acquired Book-mart Press are already enjoying the flexibility and expanded offerings of the new arrangement. From Courier's standpoint, having Book-mart's presses available for short runs is a terrific resource that complements existing capabilities. And as a part of the Courier organization, Book-mart now has access to a widely expanded menu of services. Recent enhancements to the Courier profile, including the Book-mart acquisition, growth of our four-color capacity and continued expansion of our fulfillment capabilities are carefully executed responses to the demands of the publishing community. In a recent Boston Globe article, some of our customers comment on changes at Courier. Ann DeLacey, Vice President and Director of Manufacturing and Inventory Management at Addison Wesley, says, "Courier now offers diverse services, bolstered by its getting into four-color printing." Houghton Mifflin agrees. "Because we often wait until the last minute to decide how many copies of a textbook will be printed, we know that we can rely on Courier's quick turnaround time," said Michael O'Dea, Director of Manufacturing at HM's College Division. Base Guiley, a vice president at John Wiley & Sons in New York, adds, "No one can afford obsolescence any longer," referring to warehoused and remaindered books. With short and medium runs readily available, Courier customers can spend their resources moving books, not storing them. Careful planning and responsiveness has resulted in a winning situation for all involved - Courier, Book-mart and our customers. EPP - Tip of the Month When applying type styles to text created in the page layout applications, do not apply the bold or italic style attributes available in the type menu or type manipulation palette. Choose the actual font name from the font menu. For example, to get Century Old Style Bold, you should select Century Old Style Bold in the font menu. Choosing Old Style Regular and then artificially making it bold with the bold style attribute may not yield the expected result upon high-resolution imagesetting. Even though it may look good on your screen and laser printer, your film could come out with the font in its regular weight, or worse yet, in a substituted font. EPP Tips are from Right from the Start, published by Courier Corporation. The guide is available in PDF form online, or you can request a printed copy through your sales representative or by e-mailing Priscille Georgeou at georgeou@courier.com. PDF Saves Time and Improves Accuracy for Courier Customers By using PDF files - files prepard in Adobe's Portable Document Format - Courier and many of our customers are improving throughput for both our operations PDF files eliminate many of the errors, inconsistencies and platform dependencies that often hinder book production. As a result, these files provide a level of predictability to the process that PostScript and application files do not. Scott Vaughan, Manager of Electronic File Preparation at Courier Stoughton, reports a decrease in preflight time when using PDF files. "With fewer inconsistencies and file errors, we can predict imaging time better. They're also a good way to troubleshoot, since the PDF file so closely replicates the final product. Ideally, more and more of our customers will embrace this technology, utilize it when submitting their electronic files, and realize immediate benefits. Barbara Palumbo, Manager of Electronic Production at Prentice Hall Direct says, "We looked to Courier to help us reduce cycle times and improve electronic file fidelity by utilizing PDF technology. Courier has proven to be an innovator in this field." If you have questions regarding PDF files, contact Steve Franzino, Vice President of Technology, at (978)251-6226. Simon & Schuster and Courier This spring, Simon & Schuster selected Courier to help them with a technical venture, calibrating their ColorblindTM System. By performing a series of controlled print runs on Courier's four-color equipment, they created a generic International Color Consortium (ICC) profile. In the future, by applying this profile to their color scans, they will be able to provide their printers with files that are corrected for color variation inherent to their scanning equipment and a typical four-color printing environment. Also through this process, Courier obtained an ICC profile specific to our own equipment. All our customers benefit from the higher color fidelity we can now obtain by applying this profile to color scans we perform in-house. Bob Quirk, Manufacturing Manager at Courier Kendallville said, "It's a significant and positive step toward quality improvement. We were happy to be the first supplier chosen by Simon & Schuster for this important test." Courier People On the Move In Sales, Scott Brown joins Courier's Philadelphia sales team.
