175 Years! Did you know that Courier began as a newspaper -The Chelmsford Courier- in 1824? In the upcoming issues of Fine Print, we will tell you a lot more about our long and colorful history- all in recognition of our 175 years in business. Right From the Start - Tip of the Month by Mark Cobleigh, Digital Prepress Specialist, Westford In today's digital prepress world, you don't need to wait until you know the exact reduction/enlargement percentage and the precise cropping to send your artwork in to us for scanning. Even if the the book's layout is not complete, send the artwork to us as soon as you know the rough (+ or - 20%) cropping and printed image size. We will quickly provide you with the scans (hi- and lo-res). You can then build the lo-res scans into the files yourself, enabling us to automatically substite the hi-res scans at imaging time. You get more precise control over the images when you place them yourselves, you save money by not paying us to place the images, and you speed throughput by getting the scanning done ahead of time. Courier Prints Commemorative 1,000,000th Book Coriolis Celebrates World's Fastest Growing Computer Book Series Over the years Courier has been pleased to see and share in the steady growth of technology publisher Coriolis, and this year their growth has been nothing short of spectacular. A new series of computer training guides published by Certification Insider Press, an imprint of the Coriolis Group, recently became the fastest growing computer book series in its first year of publication. Along the way, Courier was pleased to print a commemorative 1,000,000th book in the series which was signed by Courier and Coriolis employees and presented to Coriolis CEO and Publisher Kieth Wieskamp. Wieskamp acknowledged Courier's role in their tremendous success, "Printing used to be an endless worry until we started working with Courier. Their high-quality service, support and print work has helped us grow by leaps and bounds." Coriolis has published over 40 certification guides and plans to continue rapid expansion. Update: Y2K at Courier Courier's Year 2000 project is aimed at assuring that all the Company's systems, operations and facilities will function properly at the turn of the century. The corporate project team, which monitors overall project performance, reports that we are proceeding on schedule. Current efforts are focused on installing new compliant infrastructure software, implementing an improved and compliant manufacturing information system, and continuing to assess the embedded systems in the manufacturing equipment and facilities. We are also working to insure that Courier will continue to receive an uninterrupted supply of goods and services from our vendors. To that end, the Y2K project team is surveying Courier's key raw material suppliers and service providers. The program includes obtaining written confirmation from each vendor outlining their Year 2000 plans, as well as on-site plant visits to review their compliance efforts. Courier has already visited several key paper, ink, plate and corrugated suppliers. Courier remains committed to working with our customers, vendors and service providers to resolve our mutual Year 2000 issues. Walker Miller Retires from National When Walker Miller was getting ready to retire from National Publishing Company at 65 years of age and after 42 years of service, he noticed that the office messenger job was open. The year was 1983, and he took that position, much to the delight of those who didn't want to see him go. After another fifteen years of service, Walker finally retired last July at the age of 80. In his long career at National, he held several positions in the plant. He contributed greatly to the companies success, and his gentlemanly presence will be profoundly missed. Congratulations to Walker and his wife Madeline. We hope they enjoy a long and happy retirement. Short Subjects
