Overview
What Vonage is
Vonage (formerly Nexmo) is a communications platform whose SMS API delivers text messages to users worldwide across a global carrier network.
Courier sits in front of it as one API, so you keep Vonage for SMS and add push, an in-app inbox, design, and journeys on top.
You need a Courier account and your own Vonage account (API key, API secret, and a From number).
Why Courier
What you get with Vonage + Courier
Add push in the same send
Reach mobile and web with push alongside SMS from one notification, no new integration in your code.
Add an in-app inbox for web and mobile
Give your app an in-product notification center (SDKs for web, React, iOS, Android, Flutter, React Native), so users see more than just texts.
Automate multi-step flows
Trigger reminders, verification, and lifecycle sequences with delays and branching, all delivered through Vonage.
Write once, edit without code
Compose and localize SMS copy in Courier's editor. Product and support change messaging without a deploy.
Send to lists and audiences
Broadcast a one-off or recurring text to an entire list through Vonage, alongside your transactional messages.
Localize a message in seconds
Pick a language and let Courier translate your message with AI, then tweak any string.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Vonage with Courier?
Yes. Vonage is a supported SMS provider in Courier. You keep Vonage for SMS delivery and use Courier's Send API to trigger and template the messages, while adding email, push, and Courier Inbox on the same API.
Do I still need my own Vonage account?
Yes. Courier does not resell SMS, so messages send through your own Vonage account, from number, and billing. You supply your Vonage API key and API secret, and Courier orchestrates the sending on top of them.
What do I need to connect Vonage to Courier?
Your Vonage API key, API secret, and from number. Enter all three on the Vonage integration page in Courier and click Save. The credentials come from your Vonage account dashboard.
How should I format recipient phone numbers for Vonage?
Store the number as phone_number on the recipient profile in full E.164 form: country code, area code, and number with no spaces or dashes, for example +12025550156. Courier reads that field to address the SMS.
Which number does Courier send Vonage SMS from?
The from number you configured on the integration, which is the sender your recipients see. It is one of the three saved settings alongside the API key and secret that Courier passes to the Vonage SMS API.
Can I override Vonage settings for a single message?
Yes. Anything inside message.providers.vonage.override replaces what Courier sends to the Vonage SMS API. You can override apiKey, apiSecret, fromNumber, and url per message, useful for multi-tenant sending from different accounts.
Is Courier a replacement for Vonage?
No. Vonage still delivers the SMS; Courier sits in front of it. Courier adds the Send API, Design Studio, and Journeys, plus push and Courier Inbox, so Vonage becomes one channel in a multichannel stack.
