Overview
What Expo is
Expo is a framework for building and deploying React Native apps, with built-in support for push notifications to iOS and Android.
Courier sits in front of it, manages device tokens for you, and adds an in-app inbox and SMS, so you get a complete mobile messaging stack from one API.
You need a Courier account and your own Expo access token.
Why Courier
What you get with Expo + Courier
We manage device tokens
Courier stores and manages Expo push tokens across iOS and Android, so you stop tracking device registrations and expiry yourself.
Add an in-app inbox
Pair push with an in-product notification center (web and mobile SDKs), so a tapped push opens the full message history in your app.
Complete the mobile picture with SMS
Add SMS alongside push from the same notification, so you can reach users on more than one channel from a single send.
Design push without code
Compose and localize push content in Courier's editor. Product teams change messaging without a deploy.
Automate multi-step flows
Onboarding, re-engagement, and lifecycle sequences across push, in-app, and SMS with delays and branching.
Localize a message in seconds
Pick a language and let Courier translate your push content with AI, then tweak any string.

Setup
Connect it in minutes
An admin adds Expo once on the Integrations page in Courier. Once connected, Courier manages tokens and your team can send push, add an in-app inbox, and layer in SMS.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Expo with Courier?
Yes. Courier connects to Expo as a push provider, so you deliver push notifications to your React Native app through Expo's push service using Courier's Send API, alongside your other channels.
Do I still need my own Expo account?
Yes. Courier does not replace Expo. You keep your Expo project and generate an Expo access token there, and Courier uses it to send through Expo's push notification service.
What do I need to connect Expo to Courier?
An Expo access token. Enter it on the Expo integration page in Courier and click Save. Courier then authenticates to Expo's push service with that token to deliver notifications.
How do I store a user's Expo push token in Courier?
Put it on the recipient profile under the expo field: token for one device, or tokens for several, each an ExponentPushToken[...]. If you send both, Courier merges and deduplicates them.
Does Expo push through Courier work for both iOS and Android?
Yes, delivery runs through Expo's push service for both platforms. For iOS you must keep valid APNs credentials in Expo (the p12 certificate expires yearly), or sends fail at send time.
Can I customize the Expo payload Courier sends?
Yes. Use a provider override under expo to set native Expo options like ttl or sound. Courier passes those fields straight through to Expo's push API on the send.
Is Courier a replacement for Expo?
No. Expo still delivers the push to devices. Courier adds one API for content design, Journeys, and other channels like email, SMS, and Courier Inbox on top of Expo delivery.
