Knock alternatives in 2026: 5 platforms compared

Looking for a Knock alternative? Compare Courier, Novu, SuprSend, MagicBell, and Customer.io on workflows, preferences, free tiers, and how each one bills.

Last updated: November 2026

Courier is the best Knock alternative if product, growth, and engineering all work on your notifications. Your growth team builds journeys and edits content in visual tools, your engineers work in the API, CLI, and MCP server, and both work on the same templates and journeys. One template sent to one person counts as one send, whatever channels it reaches.

Quick picks:

  • Courier: best overall, for teams that share notifications across product, growth, and engineering.
  • Novu: if you want an open-source core.
  • SuprSend: if you want per-notification pricing with a free tier.
  • MagicBell: if the in-app inbox is most of what you need.
  • Customer.io: if you mainly send marketing email to a profile database.

1. Courier

Courier is a customer messaging platform for product notifications and lifecycle journeys, built so engineers and non-technical teams work on the same things.

  • Your growth team builds without a ticket. The Journeys canvas handles delays, branches, batching, digests, and A/B experiments with per-variant results. Design Studio edits email, SMS, push, chat, and in-app content on one canvas, with AI Translations for every locale.
  • Your engineers get the same objects in code. Everything in the UI is on the API: journeys, templates, brands, routing, preferences, and tenants. A typed SDK in 7 languages, a CLI, a hosted MCP server, and Courier Skills let coding agents build with Courier correctly.
  • Preferences you don't have to build. A hosted preference page, an embeddable preference center for your app, or the API for your own UI. Knock offers a hosted page, but an embedded center there is one you build on its API.
  • Inbox and Toasts on every platform. Drop-in components for React, JavaScript, iOS, Android, React Native, and Flutter. Inbox has no fee of its own.
  • Automatic failover across 50+ providers. Courier sits on top of SendGrid, SES, Twilio, FCM, APNs, and the rest, and switches to a backup when one fails.
  • Your customers can design their own messages. Courier Create embeds the same editor, white-labeled, in your product.

Pricing: the Developer plan is free for 10,000 sends a month. Business is $0.005 per send with no platform fee or volume cap. A template that reaches email, push, and Inbox through the Send API counts as one send, where Knock would bill three messages. In a journey, each Send node delivers one channel, so it counts one send per node. AI credits are billed separately.

Twilio, LaunchDarkly, CircleCI, and Nav run on Courier.

2. Novu

Novu is notification infrastructure with an open-core model: the core is MIT-licensed on GitHub, with enterprise modules under a commercial license. Novu Cloud bills per workflow run, one execution for one subscriber regardless of steps or channels. Free covers 10,000 runs a month. Pro starts at $30 for 30,000 runs, and Team at $250 for 250,000, with $1.20 per 1,000 extra runs. Novu's pricing page lists self-hosted deployment under Enterprise.

Courier vs Novu: Courier gives your growth team Design Studio, Journeys, and experiments, alongside the API. See Courier vs Novu.

3. SuprSend

SuprSend prices by notification: each channel a user receives counts separately, so email, SMS, and in-app for one event is three notifications. Free covers 10,000 notifications a month. Essentials is $100 a month, billed annually at $1,200, for 50,000 notifications. Business is $250 a month, billed annually at $3,000, and adds batching, digests, and user preferences. Multi-tenant support is an add-on or Enterprise.

Courier vs SuprSend: a multi-channel Courier template sent through the Send API is one send, not one per channel. Tenants are included on every Courier plan.

4. MagicBell

MagicBell centers on the in-app notification inbox. It bills by delivery, counting every channel a user receives a notification on. Builder is free for 1,000 deliveries a month. Startup is $249 a month for 50,000 deliveries, then $0.0025 per delivery.

Courier vs MagicBell: Courier's Inbox comes with journeys, Design Studio, preferences, and provider failover on the same platform, at no extra fee per channel.

5. Customer.io

Customer.io is a marketing automation platform priced by profile. Essentials is $100 a month for 5,000 profiles (people and objects) and 1 million emails. Customer.io counts every profile that existed in a billing cycle, including ones you deleted.

Courier vs Customer.io: Courier bills per send, so a large customer database doesn't raise your bill, and the same platform runs your product notifications and lifecycle journeys. See Courier vs Customer.io.

Why teams switch from Knock to Courier

  • One platform for every team. Product and growth build in visual tools, engineers and agents in code, on the same journeys and templates.
  • An embedded preference center out of the box, instead of one you build on an API.
  • A bill that doesn't multiply by channel. Adding Inbox to an email notification through the Send API doesn't add a send.

Evaluation criteria

We compared each platform on four things. Weigh them against your own workload:

  1. Who can change a message. Can your growth team edit content and timing without an engineer, while engineers manage the same objects in code?
  2. Preferences. Is there a hosted page and an embeddable component, or do you build the UI yourself?
  3. How it bills. Per send, per channel message, per workflow run, or per profile. Price the same month of traffic in each unit. The notification cost guide shows how.
  4. Channels and delivery. Inbox, chat, and provider failover on the same platform.

Pricing and features come from each vendor's own pricing pages and docs, checked November 2026.
