Knock pricing comes down to three plans: Free, Starter, and Enterprise.

  • Free: $0 a month for up to 10,000 messages, 500 guide recipients, and 500 agent credits, with no credit card.
  • Starter: $250 a month for 50,000 messages, then $0.005 per message. Guide recipients and agent credits are metered on top.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing on an annual agreement.
  • Billing unit: one message to one user on one channel. An email plus an in-app message to the same user is two messages.

Every plan includes unlimited team members, environments, workflows, broadcasts, channels, and stored profiles. Starter adds email client previews and removes Knock branding. Knock doesn't hard-cap Free: if you go over, Knock contacts you about adding a billing method. Overages are billed in arrears, on the next month's invoice.

What counts as a billable message in Knock?

Knock bills one message to one user on one channel, so every channel a user receives adds a message.

  • In-app feed messages count. In-app is a channel like email or SMS, so every feed item is a message.
  • Workflow triggers don't. Knock charges for messages, not for the workflow runs that produce them.
  • Guide views don't count as messages. Guides are billed by recipient instead.
  • Every environment counts. Usage accrues in development and staging environments, not only production. Sandboxed messages don't count, but the in-app channel doesn't support sandbox mode.
  • Provider fees are separate. Postmark, Twilio, and your other providers bill you directly.

What else does Knock meter?

Guide recipients. Guides are Knock's in-app banners, popups, and announcements. Knock bills each unique user who sees at least one guide in a month, separately from messages. Show guides to 10,000 users a month on Starter and the 7,500 above the 2,500 allowance add $375 at $0.05 each.

Agent credits. Knock agents consume credits, at $0.01 each above your plan's allowance.

Enterprise pricing models. Enterprise uses one of two meters: messages sent, with volume discounts, or monthly notified recipients, where you pay for each user you notify in a month instead of per message. Knock doesn't publish Enterprise rates.

What's gated to Knock Enterprise?

Knock reserves these for Enterprise:

  • Translations (i18n)
  • Per-tenant branding, preferences, translations, and guides. Tenants themselves work on every plan.
  • SAML SSO and SCIM directory sync (Google SSO is on every plan)
  • Custom roles and permissions, and audit logs
  • HIPAA compliance and a BAA
  • Datadog, New Relic, Segment, and Heap extensions, plus data warehouse sync
  • Batch render limits beyond 10 items
  • Template migration services and dedicated infrastructure

On Courier, per-tenant branding and preferences, translations, and batches of up to 25 events come with every plan, including the free Developer plan.

What does Knock cost at real volumes?

On Starter, a month's bill works out as:

Text
$250
+ (messages - 50,000) x $0.005 messages = users notified x channels each
+ (guide recipients - 2,500) x $0.05
+ (agent credits - 2,000) x $0.01

Before provider fees, two common workloads cost:

WorkloadKnock StarterCourier Business
20,000 emails a month$250. Starter's $250 covers up to 50,000 messages$100. 20,000 sends × $0.005
500,000 events a month, each sent as email plus in-app$5,000. 1,000,000 messages: $250 plus 950,000 × $0.005$2,500. 500,000 sends × $0.005 through the Send API

How Courier's pricing compares

Courier bills per send: one template to one recipient. The Developer plan is free for 10,000 sends a month, with Journeys, Broadcasts, the MCP server, the CLI, and the SDKs included. Business is $0.005 per send from the first send, with no platform fee and no volume cap.

  • Multi-channel counts once. A template that reaches email, push, and Inbox through the Send API is one send, where Knock counts three messages. In a journey, each Send node delivers one channel, so email plus Inbox counts two sends.
  • In-app costs the same as email. Inbox has no fee of its own. An in-app message is a standard send.
  • Translations on every plan. Localize templates on any plan, including Developer. Business adds AI Translations, the AI node, and EU data residency, and AI features run on AI credits at $1 per 100, billed separately. Knock gates translations to Enterprise and expects EU data residency by the end of 2026.
  • Per-tenant branding and preferences on every plan. Tenants carry brand, preference defaults, and properties, and digests come on every plan too. On Knock, per-tenant branding and preferences need Enterprise.
  • Failover across 50+ providers. Courier routes to the providers you choose and fails over automatically when one goes down.

Enterprise adds the SLA, Okta SSO and SCIM, the audit trail, RBAC, and observability integrations. Courier is SOC 2 Type II and signs a HIPAA BAA on request. For the full feature comparison, see Courier vs Knock, and for other options, Knock alternatives.
